Tubing

Square and Rectangular Structural Tubing

Formed structural steel tubing is one the most versatile forms of structural steel. Its varied applications include piping and conduits, drains and railings, building trusses and scaffolding, and columns and bleacher frames. Structural shaped tubing is made from round tubing on specially designed rolls on a reducing mill or on a roll forming mill. It is produced in accordance with mechanical properties and chemical composition requirements of ASTM A-500 (cold formed) and ASTM A-501 (hot formed). Normal size range in square is from 1/2 inch to 16 inch, and size range in rectangular tubing is from 1/2 inch to 12 inches x 20 inches.

Square Tubing Weight Formula

W = 13.60 (D – T) T
D = Outside distance across flat
T = Wall thickness to three decimal places

Rectangular Tubing Weight Formula

W = 13.60 (D – T) T
D = The mean of the sides of a rectangle
Side 1 plus Side 2 divided by 2
